Camouflage to get you hooked

Camouflage to get you hooked

So far, we’ve only been able to see the Škoda Elroq compact electric SUV in its original camouflage, which will be kept in place until the car’s official premiere. The inspiration for the camouflage was a detail from the brand’s logo.

The basis of the Škoda Elroq’s camouflage is a trapezoid that is formed by part of the brand’s first letter and the integrated hook accent (which turns an “s” sound into a “sh”). This detail is repeated in different sizes and alignments to create a pattern that is intended to give a taste of the car’s appearance, without giving away the details. The unmasked car will not be fully revealed until the world premiere.

The trapezoid camouflage is based on Škoda’s new graphic pattern and also reflects the character of the Elroq, which will be the first car to feature the Czech carmaker’s brand new Modern Solid design language. “The camouflage created from the hook accent motif emphasises the Elroq’s elegant but robust silhouette. At the same time, it perfectly covers the new model’s details and combines our two distinctive corporate colours to attract attention and strengthen brand awareness,” says Michael Lansdorf from the Škoda marketing department.

It is striking the right balance between giving a glimpse of the car’s shape and masking the details that is the biggest challenge when designing camouflage. “We need to showcase the brand identity, but we also need to visually break up the whole so that it’s difficult for the human eye to perceive the shapes under the camouflage,” designer Petr Petzet explains.

Where did the flamingos come from?

The car’s camouflage has another unmissable feature: flamingos on the rear windows. “Why flamingos? Firstly, their vibrant pink colour provides a striking contrast against the Škoda brand green colours. Secondly, they have a certain significance for Elroq that you’ll learn more about this autumn. Stay tuned,” says Veronika Ziegaus, head of brand strategy and content production at Škoda.

The trapezoid camouflage created from the hook accent does the job perfectly. But previous camouflage designs have also been successful. To give a glimpse of the new Superb at last year’s Tour de France, for example, the camouflage drew on maps for inspiration. This referenced the spirit of adventure and thirst for exploration that underpin the Škoda brand.

This year’s Tour de France also featured a Škoda car in camouflage. It was the Elroq with its new hook accent camouflage and distinctive pink flamingos.

Built on the MEB platform, the Elroq compact electric SUV is similar in technical terms to the Enyaq family models. It is the Czech carmaker’s first car that makes full use of the new Modern Solid design language, evident in the new Tech Deck Face radiator grille and the Škoda lettering on the front. The Elroq offers a range of up to 560 kilometres per charge, delivers up to 220 kW and has a 470 litre luggage compartment.
