Safety: New and further improved state-of-the-art assistance systems for maximum protection

Mladá Boleslav, 8 April 2024 – The second-generation Škoda Kodiaq comes with numerous new assistance systems. The spectrum ranges from Turn Assist, which helps prevent accidents when turning at junctions, to Remote Park Assist, which enables parking via the new MyŠkoda app. Many systems already available in the predecessor, such as Side Assist and Travel Assist, benefit from major functional upgrades. On top of that, the active and passive safety of the new Kodiaq has been further enhanced by the use of new nano radar sensors on the front apron and rear bumper.

The new Škoda Kodiaq is now equipped with nano radar sensors. Positioned in the right and left corners of the front apron and rear bumper, they further enhance the performance of the state-of-the-art assistance systems, such as the upgraded Front Assist or Side Assist. Among the new assistance systems which increase safety and comfort are Turn Assist, Collision Avoidance Assist, Crossroad Assist and Exit Warning. Turn Assist responds with a warning and, where appropriate, automatic braking if there is a vehicle approaching when turning in the face of oncoming traffic. Collision Avoidance Assist automatically amplifies steering movements during sudden evasive manoeuvres. Crossroad Assist uses radar sensors and the front camera to warn of crossing traffic, cyclists or pedestrians when pulling out of a driveway or blind exit. Where appropriate, it triggers visual and acoustic warnings and then automatically applies the brakes. Exit Warning provides a visual warning in the exterior mirror as well as a warning sound when the door is opened while traffic is approaching from behind. It has a range of 35 metres and covers an angle of 120 degrees.

The new Intelligent Park Assist can automatically park the Kodiaq in end-on and parallel parking spaces. It now also controls the vehicle’s gear-shifting in addition to the steering, and stops automatically if the system detects an obstacle. Further functions will be added to the Intelligent Park Assist at a later date. The new Trained Parking and Remote Parking options offer even more parking convenience. Trained Parking will enable drivers to initiate a previously performed and saved parking manoeuvre from outside the vehicle via the MyŠkoda app on their smartphone. With Remote Parking, customers can use the MyŠkoda app on their mobile phone within a four-metre range from the vehicle to perform the parking manoeuvre. This feature enables them to automatically steer the Kodiaq into a row of vehicles parked parallel or perpendicular to the road and again to exit such a parking space. This feature will be introduced later this year.

With the latest version of Side Assist, the detection range for vehicles coming from behind increases from 70 to 90 metres for more safety, especially on motorways. This is due to more powerful nano radar sensors positioned in the corners of the bumpers. The improved Travel Assist offers enhanced visualisation of other nearby vehicles in the Virtual Cockpit. In the Assisted Drive package, Travel Assist includes Adaptive Lane Assist and Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (PACC). Working in concert with the Traffic Sign Recognition and navigation system, this anticipates bends, junctions and roundabouts. The maximum speed permitted at any time is acquired from the Intelligent Speed Assist, which also uses the latest version of the Traffic Sign Recognition assistant and adapts the speed to upcoming restrictions in a timely manner, without using the brakes. The new Attention and Drowsiness Assist replaces the previous Driver Alert system. It monitors driver behaviour, assesses the driver’s potential level of fatigue and triggers visual and acoustic warnings in the Virtual Cockpit if necessary. In addition to data from the power steering, the new system now also accesses information from various vehicle control units, including Lane Assist, and detects deviations from normal steering behaviour at speeds over 10 km/h.
